Sarah's Note: Growing Pains

From time to time, my daughter will wake up screaming in the night. When we ask the doctor about it, they always say the same thing: growing pains.

I myself have been known to wake up in the middle of the night from time to time. If maturity and self-awareness didn't stop me, I might also sometimes scream, not from pain, but from excitement, anxiety, the sense that the sands are shifting and things are not as I thought them to be--or won't be from now on.

My guess is that some of you might too be familiar with this experience. Perhaps we all share this diagnosis: growing pains. As we take steps to reach our goals, make the leaps and take the risks necessary to advance our work, there will be pains, both real and imagined. There's nothing to do for this discomfort but to bear with it and through it, know that we will wake up bigger and stronger, and take comfort in the fact that if things are not tomorrow as they were today, we are doing something right.

The Purple Crayon needs Volunteers!

We need help with a variety of tasks, from flyering and data entry, reception and administrative help, to communications and social media. If you are excited about what we're doing here, and would like to help us get the word out, get the work done, and be successful, we need you!!

We are also looking for interns who can provide at least 20 hours a week of general assistance, in exchange for mentoring either in sound and recording or social enterprise/non-profit management. Other possible perks include entry to live music events, workspace time, access to consultants/advice--and just generally getting to be part of everything Purple Crayon.

Whether you have a lot of time or just a little, contact us to see what you can do. And thanks!

Open Canvas Monthly Meetings Start Tomorrow--October 4th

The fall session of Open Canvas's facilitated monthly meetings starts tomorrow at 10 am. Here are what some participants in the Kickoff meeting over the summer had to say:

"[It was] wonderful to connect with others who express themselves creatively in so many different ways. Thank you!!

"A most meaningful meet-up"

"So nice to share resources."

"Nice group for finding like support and kindness. Positivity."

"Connecting faces, websites, artwork to the person was/is essential."

Additional programming (registration for these workshops will be announced separately) will include practical workshops on legal topics for artists, tax and accounting basics, funding your work, and more.

For more information and to sign-up for this series of four monthly discussion groups, click here. And drop us a line if you'd like to be added to Open Canvas's specific email list for more frequent news and updates related to this program.

Get Your Funk On!

On November 17th, get ready to boogie down in funky town. OK, so maybe we're a little geeked out about this show, but it is going to be a booty-shaking good time and we don't want you to miss it!
